Orthotics enhance or modify foot function and gait problems. Orthotics are designed to treat various biomechanical problems in the feet, legs and spine and can often eliminate the need for invasive surgery.
Many orthotics are commercially manufactured over-the-counter devices. (Think Dr. Scholl’s.) They feature cushioned heel cups, toe pads and insoles designed to be hand-trimmed and placed inside shoes. Some consumers may find them helpful for some minor problems. But the most effective orthotics are custom-made to meet the unique needs of just one person.
