Orthotics
Orthotics enhance or modify foot function and gait problems. Orthotic inserts are designed to treat various biomechanical problems in the feet, legs, and spine and can often eliminate the need for invasive surgery.
Many orthotics are commercially manufactured over-the-counter devices (think Dr. Scholl’s). They feature cushioned heel cups, toe pads, and insoles designed to be hand-trimmed and placed inside shoes. Some consumers may find them helpful for some minor problems. But the most effective orthotics are custom-made to meet the unique needs of just one person.
Made from an actual impression of your foot, custom orthotics duplicate misalignments or defects in the foot. Then, your physical therapist can design a corrective device that eliminates malalignments and deformities. With the right device, we can correct:
- Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
- Arch and instep problems
- Hip and back pain
- Uneven leg lengths and gait problems
- Bunions
- Hammer toe
- Morton’s neuroma
For Referring Physicians
Do you have a patient you feel would benefit from custom orthotics? Orthotics are among the most effective and patient-friendly nonsurgical treatments in orthopedic physical therapy. In addition to correcting or simply easing the discomfort of foot problems, they can help realign the legs, hips, and spine, relieving pressure on spinal discs and nerves more affordably.
If your patient’s need for orthotics was preceded by orthopedic or podiatric surgery, our therapist will work closely with your patient throughout the rehabilitation process.
